If you’re a high school sports fan, this week is your week on the New Castle News sports pages.
On Tuesday, the News sports staff will reveal its Lawrence County high school softball all-stars. A total of 19 of the best girls players from the eight county schools, including one Most Valuable Player, will grace two pages of coverage that will include photos, bios, coaches comments and statistics.
Wednesday will be the day for baseball, as a Most Valuable Player will headline 19 of the county’s top players. The 19 will be featured on baseball cards that will include photos, statistics and a story on the all-stars over two pages of coverage.
The News sports staff, after many hours of hard work and research by sports writer Ron Poniewasz, made the selections on the county all-stars.
On Friday, the sports staff will reveal its selections for the 10 boys and girls candidates for Lawrence County’s Athletes of the Year.
Saturday is the Big Reveal, as Lawrence County’s Male and Female Athletes of the Year are announced.
The decision was a tough one, as usual, but two athletes stood out.
We’re not going to spill the beans on who they are (one is planning to surprise mom), but we will give you some hints about where the Athlete of the Year photo was shot: Think a guy named Greek and tens of thousands of dollars of gold.

PONY COACHES
In case you think we forgot about Thursday, we saved a good one for that day, as well.
Sports writer John D’Abruzzo and photographer Courtney Caughey joined forces on a story featuring a group of former Lawrence County high school sports stars, who decided to “give back” to their Neshannock Township community by volunteering to coach Pony League Baseball.
