NAMES IN THE GAME: Chrobak contributes on mound for Penn State-Behrend

Penn State-Behrend’s Andy Chrobak continues to dominate the opposition on the mound.
Chrobak spun a complete-game gem in a 17-0 win over Mount Aloysius earlier in the week.
Chrobak worked seven innings, allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
A junior pitcher from Laurel High, Chrobak is 3-1 in four appearances — all starts — with a 2.52 ERA. He has worked 25 innings, allowing 14 hits and eight runs — seven earned — with six walks and 20 strikeouts.
Chrobak was named the Behrend Lions Athlete of the Week for his effort the week of March 24 as well.
The Lions are 12-4.
Last year, Chrobak made a big impact in his first season with Penn State-Behrend. He went 5-4 with a 4.44 ERA and completed four games.
Elsewhere around college baseball:

•Slippery Rock University’s Scott Bender was 1 for 6 in a doubleheader loss to Ashland (Ohio) University on Wednesday.
Bender, a junior outfielder from Neshannock, was 1 for 3 in the opener, a 6-1 loss.
On Sunday, Bender went 2 for 8 as the Rock dropped a pair to Shippensburg in PSAC action.
Bender is batting .446 in 19 games. He has one home run and 12 RBIs.
Mark Tanner is a junior pitcher and University of Kentucky transfer from Neshannock competing for the Rock.
Tanner is 0-2 with a 40.50 ERA in three appearances — all starts. He has pitched four innings, allowing 16 hits and 19 runs, 18 earned. Tanner has walked three and struck out five.
The Rock is 12-7.
•Mercyhurst College’s John Morris had a rough outing in a 7-6 loss to Canisius on Wednesday.
Morris blew a save in pitching one inning, allowing three hits and three runs — all earned — with no walks and two strikeouts. He entered the game with a 6-4 lead and was 4 for 4 in save opportunities.
Morris, a senior pitcher from Mohawk, is 1-1 in eight games with four saves. He has pitched eight innings, allowing six hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts.
The Lakers are 12-12.
•A total of 15 local products are producing for Westminster College.
John Izzo, a junior first baseman from Union, is batting .462 in 14 games, all starts. He has a team-best three home runs with 14 RBIs. On the mound, Izzo is 1-0 in one appearance — a start. Izzo has a 16.20 ERA in five innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.
T.J. Fee, a senior catcher from New Castle, is batting .471 in nine games with one homer and nine RBIs.
Mike Williams, a freshman outfielder from Union, is hitting .400 in 12 games with three RBIs.
Andrew Robison, a senior pitcher from Wilmington, is 2-1 in three games — all of which were starts. He has a 6.50 ERA with six walks and eight strikeouts.
Mike Busin, a senior third baseman from Neshannock, is batting .289 in 13 games with eight RBIs. He has pitched in one game with no record and a 5.40 ERA with three strikeouts.
Nick Maiorano, a junior shortstop from New Castle, is hitting .326 in 13 games with 10 RBIs.
Rick DeBlasio, a freshman outfielder from New Castle, has played in six games and has a hit in his only at-bat — a double. DeBlasio has pitched in one game as well, working 1 2/3 innings with no record and no runs allowed. He has walked two and struck out two.
Brandon Drespling, a senior outfielder from Laurel, is batting .354 in 13 games with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Jeff Elliott, a junior first baseman/designated hitter from Laurel, is hitting .346 in eight games with six RBIs.
Steve Reider, a junior catcher/outfielder from New Castle, is batting .500 in two games.
Mike McCoy, a sophomore pitcher from Union, has pitched in three games — one being a start. McCoy has no record with a 7.27 ERA in 8 2/3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
Dan Argiro, a sophomore catcher from New Castle, leads the team in hitting with a .650 average in eight games. He has five RBIs.
David Colella, a senior outfielder from New Castle, is batting .381 in 14 games with two homers and 13 RBIs.
Collin McIltrot, a freshman outfielder from New Castle, has played in one game.
Mike Ferguson, a senior pitcher from Wilmington, has yet to see any action.
Westminster is 8-6.
•Cedarville’s Brady Workman was 2 for 7 in a doubleheader loss to Ohio Dominican on Wednesday.
Workman was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored in the opener.
Workman, a junior center fielder from Shenango, is batting .208 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Five of his 10 hits have went for extra bases.
The Yellow Jackets are 7-18.
•Derek Sumner and Joe Senko are faring well for Geneva College.
Senko, a junior catcher from Shenango, is batting .222 in nine games, six of which are starts. He has seven RBIs.
Sumner, a junior pitcher/shortstop from Neshannock, is batting .316 in six games — all starts — with one RBI. On the mound, Sumner is 3-1 in five games — four of which are starts. He has three complete games and one shutout in 30 1/3 innings of action with seven walks and 42 strikeouts.
Sumner has a 2.67 ERA, surrendering 12 runs — nine earned — on 22 hits.
The Golden Tornadoes, coached by Neshannock graduate Alan Sumner, are 11-4.
•Wingate University’s Tyler Womer is seeing limited action.
Womer, a redshirt freshman third baseman from Laurel, is batting .429 with two RBIs in six games.
The Bulldogs are 17-26.
•Wooster’s John Warren worked one perfect inning in relief in a 7-6 win over 15th-ranked (NCAA Division III) Otterbein (Ohio) College on Thursday.
Warren played in both games of a doubleheader sweep of Kenyon on Sunday. In the opener, Warren was 0 for 1 and he pitched three innings as well. He allowed three hits and two runs — both earned — with two strikeouts in a no-decision in a 10-5 triumph.
In the nightcap, Warren was 0 for 1 with an RBI while playing second base and third base in a 15-6 verdict.
Warren, a junior infielder/pitcher from Union, is batting .367 in 14 games — eight of which are starts. He has four doubles and 11 RBIs.
On the mound, Warren has appeared in nine games, all in relief. He has pitched 11 2/3 innings with no record and a 3.86 earned run average. Warren has walked five and struck out 11.
Wooster, which is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III poll, is 22-2.
•Clarion’s Doug Brown was 1 for 6 in a doubleheader split with Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday.
In the first game, Brown was 1 for 3 in an 8-2 loss.
Brown, a senior shortstop from Laurel, is batting .217 in 14 games, all of which are starts. He has four RBIs.
Robert Pollum, a sophomore pitcher from Laurel, is 1-2 in three appearances, all of which are starts. He has worked 15 2/3 innings, allowing 17 hits and 10 runs — nine earned — with 11 strikeouts and seven walks.
The Golden Eagles are 7-7.
•La Roche College’s Marcus Cook saw action in a 5-4 win over Allegheny College on Wednesday.
Cook worked five effective innings in relief to earn the decision. He allowed five hits and no runs with one walk and no strikeouts.
Chester Kirkwood was 2 for 6 with a pair of RBIs in a doubleheader split with Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday. He was 1 for 4 with two RBIs in the opener, a 12-4 win.
On Sunday, Cook pitched a scoreless seventh inning in a 6-1 win over Bethany College.
Kirkwood, a freshman catcher/designated hitter from Neshannock, is batting .471 in 11 games — all starts. He has six RBIs.
Cook, a freshman catcher/first baseman/pitcher from Laurel, has pitched in five games in relief and is 2-0. He has a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 innings with five walks and one strikeout.
The Redhawks are 14-6.
•Maryland’s Tim Kearney started and earned a no-decision in a 9-5 win over George Mason on Wednesday in a nonconference battle.
Kearney pitched two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts.
On Sunday, Kearney took the loss in a 6-2 verdict against Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest.
Kearney, a sophomore pitcher from Neshannock, didn’t record an out, pitching to one batter. He allowed one hit and an earned run.
Kearney has pitched in four games, three of which were in relief with an 0-1 record and a 12.46 ERA. He has pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and six runs — all earned — with six walks and three strikeouts.
The Terrapins are 16-13.
•Corey Collins is contributing for Penn State-Greater Allegheny.
Collins, a freshman from Laurel, is batting .355 with one home run and 15 RBIs. He 21 hits and 11 runs scored.
Penn State-Greater Allegheny is 20-13.
•Notre Dame’s Matt Katich saw his first action last week.
Katich, a freshman catcher from Mohawk, struck out in his only at-bat.
The Fighting Irish are 13-9-1.
•According to West Virginia University’s sports information office, it appears freshman pitcher Matt Wier will get redshirted.
Wier is a Mohawk graduate.

Softball
Starting strong
•Locals are contributing to Westminster College’s early-season success.
Jenn Emery, a sophomore pitcher from Laurel, leads the team in hitting with a .462 average with one homer and 13 RBIs. She is also 3-1 in the circle with a 1.31 earned run average in six appearances, five of which are starts.
Emery has three complete games and two shutouts, working 32 innings and allowing 24 hits and eight runs — six earned — with 20 strikeouts and four walks.
Maria Joseph, a senior shortstop from New Castle, has played in 13 games, all starts. Joseph is batting .359 with eight RBIs.
Ashley Beltz, a freshman catcher from Laurel, is batting .344 in 13 games, 12 of which are starts. Beltz has one home run and six RBIs.
Kayla Rosati, a sophomore outfielder from New Castle, has played in five games — three of which being starts. Rosati is hitting .200.
Kelly Fee (sophomore, catcher/third base, Neshannock) has appeared in one game. Kara Joseph (freshman, shortstop/second base, New Castle) is also competing for Westminster.
The Lady Titans are 9-4.
•Pittsburgh’s Kaitlyn Schuster is seeing action in the circle.
Schuster, a junior from Ellwood City Lincoln, has pitched in six games, two of which were starts with a 1-1 record and a 3.28 ERA. She has worked 10 2/3 innings, allowing 11 hits and 10 runs — five earned — with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Lady Panthers are 17-12.
•Waynesburg’s Haley Kramer and Stephanie Leisie both saw action in a doubleheader loss to St. Vincent College on Thursday.
Kramer was 0 for 6 in the twinbill and Leisie was 0 for 5.
Kramer went 1 for 7 in a doubleheader loss to Carlow on Wednesday. She was 1 for 3 in the nightcap with a double in an 8-2 setback.
Leisie played in the second game, going 1 for 2.
Kramer, a junior outfielder from Laurel, is batting .244 in 14 games, all of which are starts. She has two RBIs and five steals.
Leisie, a freshman infielder from Ellwood City, has played in 10 games — nine of which are starts. She is hitting .143.
The Lady Yellow Jackets are 4-10.
•Slippery Rock University’s Courtney Vincent was 3 for 4 with three stolen bases in a doubleheader sweep of Salem (W.Va.) International on Thursday.
Vincent was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and a pair of steals in a 16-3 victory in the opener.
Vincent is a sophomore center fielder from Wilmington.
On Sunday, Vincent was 0 for 4 as Indiana (Pa.) completed a doubleheader sweep. Vincent scored two runs in the first game, a 9-4 loss.
Vincent is batting .273 in 17 games — 14 of which are starts. She has two RBIs and nine stolen bases.
Slippery Rock is 14-6.
•Pitt-Greensburg’s Kaleigh Huff and Taylor Kimmel competed in a doubleheader loss to Westminster on Thursday.
Huff was 0 for 3 in the opener, an 8-0 loss.
Kimmel started both games in the circle. She was 1 for 3 at the plate in the opener. In the circle, Kimmel tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing 15 hits and eight runs — six earned — with three walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game, Huff went 1 for 4 with a solo home run, her first collegiate circuit clout.
Kimmel went 4 for 4 with an RBI, two doubles and a pair of runs scored. On the rubber, Kimmel worked six innings, surrendering 11 hits and 12 runs — none earned — with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Lady Titans won the nightcap, 12-7.
On Tuesday, Huff went 1 for 4 in a 7-3 decision over La Roche. Kimmel was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs, while earning the verdict in the circle. She pitched seven innings, giving up 11 hits and three runs — two earned — with no walks and five strikeouts.
Huff has played in eight games, seven of which are starts. She is batting .217 with one homer and an RBI.
Kimmel is batting .520 in eight games with seven RBIs and a stolen base. She is 2-3 in the circle in seven appearances — five of which are starts. Kimmel has a 5.30 earned run average in 37 1/3 innings, surrendering 65 hits and 43 runs — 22 earned — with 27 strikeouts and eight walks.
The Lady Panthers are 4-4.
•Penn State-Beaver’s Jamie Clouse had three hits in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Tuesday. The Lady Lions won the nightcap, 16-15.
Last week, Clouse was named the Penn State-Beaver Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
Clouse, a sophomore infielder from Laurel, was 8 for 12 with four doubles, six RBIs and six runs scored.
Penn State-Beaver is 9-12.

Men’s track
and field
Double threat
•Grove City College’s Joey Cortez and Dave Hodge competed at the Bill Van Horne Invitational hosted by Wheeling Jesuit.
Cortez, a senior from Ellwood City, was sixth in the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:24.67.
Hodge, a senior from Mohawk, was third in the triple jump with an effort of 12.52 meters.
•Slippery Rock University’s Steve Brenner turned in a solid effort at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational.
Brenner, a senior from Union, was third in the high jump with a leap of 6-6.
•Penn State-Behrend’s Jared Reed and Sara Byers participated in the Bill Van Horne Invitational at Wheeling Jesuit.
Reed, a freshman from Laurel, was sixth in the pole vault with an effort of 13-1 1/2.
Byers, a sophomore from Mohawk, was second in the high jump at 4-9 3/4 and eighth in the long jump at 13-9 1/2.

Women’s track
and field
Cooper ties mark
Westminster’s Jessi Cooper tied her own school record in the high jump at the Western Pennsylvania Championships on Saturday at Carnegie Mellon.
Cooper, a senior from Laurel, won the event with an effort of 1.65 meters. She also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship as well.
•Clarion’s Ann Stinson provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship in the javelin.
Stinson, a sophomore from Shenango, recorded a heave of 41.8 meters at the Grove City College Invitational. The mark is also a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying throw as well.
•St. Francis (Pa.) standout Anna Hoffman was third in the in 1500-meter run at the Western Pennsylvania Championships at Carnegie Mellon.
Hoffman, a sophomore from Mohawk, posted a time of 4:55.81.
•Waynesburg College’s Janet Carson took 17th in the 5000-meter run at the Western Pennsylvania Championships on Saturday at Carnegie Mellon.
Carson, a sophomore from Ellwood City, finished in 21:05.47.
•Baldwin-Wallace’s Lauren Beltz finished seventh in the 100 and 14th in the 200 at the Ohio Athletic Conference Split Squad Meet hosted by Marietta (Ohio) College. The Lady Yellow Jackets won the event with 169 points.
Beltz, a sophomore from Ellwood City, recorded a time of 14.38 in the 100 and 29.32 in the 200.
•Slippery Rock University’s Abby McKissick and Caitlin Lombardo fared well at the Maryland Terrapin Invitational.
McKissick, a senior from Wilmington, took third in the pole vault with an effort of 10-11 3/4.
Lombardo, a freshman from Shenango, was sixth in the javelin with a toss of 116-9.

Women’s tennis
Posting a sweep
Clarion’s Lisa Baumgartner claimed two victories on March 28 in a 9-0 triumph over Seton Hill.
Baumgartner, a senior from Wilmington, won her No. 2 singles match (6-0, 6-1) before teaming with Kassie Leuschel for a win at No. 2 doubles (8-0).
