Shenango hires assistant principal

NEW CASTLE — The Shenango Area School Board has named Al Dorsch as assistant high school principal.

Dorsch, who has been a science teacher in the district for about 16 years, replaces Dan Mayer, who resigned to take a position in the Fort Cherry School District.

Dorsch’s salary will be $79,123, pro-rated for the 2013-14 fiscal year that began July 1.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Schreck said 61 people applied for the position.

At its special meeting Monday, the board also:

•Hired Heather McKissick of Harlansburg Road as an English teacher at a salary of $44,475.

•Hired Brett Barron as transportation coordinator/grant writer at a pro-rated salary of $40,000. Barron, of Evans City, succeeds Linda Gajda who retired.

•Awarded a $150,123 contract to Fulena Pavers Inc. for the elementary playground renovation. The firm was the low bidder. A bid award of $159,345 to W.R. Cade Paving Inc. last month was rescinded.

•Approved an agreement with HHSDR Architects/Engineers to oversee the playground project for a $4,000 fee.

•Approved revised medical rates with Highmark for the period from Sept. 1 through June 30. Schreck said the district will save approximately $64,000 based on the collective bargaining agreement with the district’s teachers. The four-year agreement runs through the 2015-16 school year.
