NEW CASTLE —
The Shenango school board approved a $16.2 million preliminary budget.
The proposed spending plan is $712,268 higher than the current budget.
The district is applying to the state for an exception to increase the property tax above the 2.4 percent index. The index, set by the state, is the percentage the district can increase the property tax without voter approval. It is equal to 0.28 mills.
If the exception is granted, the district could increase the property tax by 0.585 mills, also without voter approval.
Obtaining state approval does not mean the district is raising taxes, according to Superintendent Eugene Thomas.
The district’s property tax is 11.79 mills.
Shenango is seeking the exception to cover an increase in payments to the district’s retirement fund.
The contribution rate, set by the Public School Employees’ Retirement System, will increase from 8.65 percent to 12.36 percent for districts in the next school year. Payments to the fund account for some of the spending increase in the preliminary budget.
A final budget must be adopted by June 30.
