In the Schools: Shenango hires security guard

NEW CASTLE — The Shenango Area School Board hired a retired state police trooper as a security guard Tuesday night.

David Tyler will be paid $20 per hour but no benefits.

He will be assigned to both the elementary and junior/senior high school buildings for the days school is in session.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Schreck said Shenango Township police will patrol as much as they can.

Tyler will serve as security guard until he is approved by the Lawrence County Common Pleas Court as school police officer.

Schreck said once approved as school police officer, he will have arrest powers.

In January, the board approved implementation of security measures that included a presence by Shenango police at both schools. However, the police have not been able to have officers assigned full time at the buildings.

Schreck said the board took a look at the situation again and believed it needed to bolster the district’s efforts.
