Shenango Schools: Timetable given to name superintendent

NEW CASTLE — The Shenango school board anticipates naming its new superintendent by May or June.

That’s the timetable given by board president Albert Burick Wednesday.

The board already has made its choice. Burick announced at a special meeting Monday it intends to name Dr. Michael Schreck as superintendent, succeeding Eugene Thomas who resigned.

In the meantime, Schreck is serving as interim superintendent with no additional compensation. Schreck has served as assistant superintendent for the last two years.

Burick also said the assistant superintendent’s position will be eliminated, resulting in “considerable savings to the district.”

Schreck’s current salary is $103,136.

Of his promotion Schreck said, “I’m excited to continue to work with the students, staff, teachers and parents of the Shenango community.”

Schreck has been employed by the district for about 17 years as a teacher and in various administrative capacities.

The board accepted Thomas’ resignation Monday. Burick read a joint statement issued by the board and Thomas at the meeting.

The statement reads in part that the board “expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr. Thomas for his efforts while serving as superintendent of this great school district and its wonderful students, parents and staff, and for the many achievements and accomplishments of the entire district team during Mr. Thomas’ tenure as superintendent.

“Mr. Thomas thanks the present and past board for providing him with the opportunity to serve in the Shenango Area School District.”

The statement continued, “Mr. Thomas would like to express his heartfelt appreciation to the staff and community for their support of the district’s programs and services during his term as superintendent.”

It added, “The board would like to thank Mr. Thomas for his contributions to our exemplary district and extends its best wishes to Mr. Thomas in his future endeavors.”
