NEW CASTLE —
Dr. Mike Schreck was hired Monday night to be Shenango school district’s superintendent.
“And I’m going to Disney World,” he said this morning.
Actually Schreck’s family vacation to Florida had been planned for some time. “It just worked out that I can say this,” he joked Tuesday.
Schreck was hired at Monday night’s board meeting by an 8-0 vote. Joe Gaus was absent.
He was given a three-year contract, effective July 1, and a $107,000 salary, retroactive to April 10, when he took over for former superintendent Eugene Thomas, who had resigned.
In addition to serving as interim superintendent, Schreck has been assistant superintendent for the past two years. Following Thomas’ resignation, the board announced plans to eliminate the assistant superintendent’s position. Schreck had earned $103,000 in that post.
As superintendent, he said, his plans include “moving forward with the programs now in place for the school district.”
Schreck joined the Shenango staff in 1995, when he was hired as elementary and high school band director. He had been elementary band director in the DuBois School District for two years prior to that.
He held the position for eight years before leaving to become assistant high school principal in Mercer.
Schreck returned to Shenango as junior high principal for the 2003-04 school year.
A 1993 graduate of Clarion University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in music education, Schreck received a master’s degree in education administration from Westminster College in 2002, his superintendent’s certification letter in 2006 and a doctorate in education administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010.

Shenango schools update weapons policy
The Shenango School District has updated a policy involving possession of weapons on school grounds. The change will permit the school security guard to carry, store and have access to weapons while performing his duties, according to district superintendent Dr. Mike Schreck.

Shenango schedules make-up registration

Board approves leave for teacher
The Shenango Area School Board has approved a family medical leave for Don Drozynski. The leave for Drozynski, a science teacher at the high school, began March 6 and is not to exceed 12 weeks.
