Shenango OKs budget, tax increase

NEW CASTLE — The Shenango school board adopted a budget Thursday night that includes a 4.8 percent property tax increase.

The $15,776,780 spending plan for the 2012-13 school year is about $150,000 higher than the current year’s budget. The budget takes effect Sunday.

All nine board members voted for adoption of the spending plan.

The property tax will increase from 11.79 mills to 12.36 mills.

The increase represents an additional $57 per $100,000 worth of a property’s assessed value.

Shenango was granted an exception by the state to raise the tax above the 2.4 percent index based on an increase in the district’s retirement costs.

The index, which is set by the state, is the percentage the district can increase the property tax without voter approval.

Without the exception, the district would have been limited to increasing the tax to 12.07 mills.

An additional $250,587 will be paid into the retirement fund for district employees, representing the biggest increase in the budget. The amount paid into the fund this year was $718,995.

Also Thursday night, the board:

•Hired Rachel Belz of Grove City as a secondary science teacher at a salary of $40,869.

•Adopted a policy allowing students to use electronic devices such as iPads and Kindles for classroom assignments.
