NEW CASTLE —
Matt DeAngelo paced the Shenango High boys golf team to the outright section championship yesterday.
DeAngelo fired a 37 to lead the Wildcats to a 199-223 Section 5, Division 2 win over Union at Rolling Hills Golf Course. It’s the Wildcats’ first section title since 2006.
“It’s exciting. The kids have worked hard all summer to get to this point,” Shenango coach John Dado said. “Hopefully we’ll get a little bit better seed and a closer site to play at in the semifinals.
“From now until then, we’ll prepare hard. The goal is to get back to the championship round and hopefully play well enough to win a title.”
The playoffs start Oct. 9 and the pairings will likely be announced on Friday according to Dado.
Darren Carone followed with a 38 for the Wildcats (11-1 section, 12-2 overall) and Lucas Villani added a 40. T.J. Steinheiser notched a 41 and Paul Turco chipped in with a 43.
Jacob Jendrysik carded a 36 for the Scotties and Cole Gorgacz scored a 41. Joe Rossi shot a 48, while Mike Galmarini and Markel Peace both contributed a 49.
