Wilmington board offers views on drill lease
Members of the Wilmington school board expressed their positions about whether to lease district land for Marcellus/Utica shale drilling. The consensus was to proceed with pursuing a lease of portions of the district’s 73.35 acres with one of two drilling companies acquiring rights in the county — Shell Oil and Hilcorp Energy.

Drill deals being considered by school districts, communities
Marcellus and Utica Shale-related drilling and leases are polka-dotting the landscape of Lawrence County. Several local government entities, including school districts, are considering or have entered land lease offers, and at least three drilling companies are pursuing leases and planning to establish drilling sites throughout the county.

Hilcorp Energy plans two wells; Shell Oil will continue drilling at existing sites
Hilcorp Energy Co. is seeking permits to drill two gas wells on property at Route 551 and Garner roads. It already has applied to the state Department of Environmental Protection for the permits to drill on the property of Laird and Joyce Whiting. The applications are under review and are pending, according to eNotices issued by DEP.

Union considering drilling lease
The potential exists for the Union school district to sign a five-year lease for shale drilling. However, the motion to recommend an agreement with Texas-based Hilcorp in Houston, was tabled at this week’s meeting.

Online well drilling sessions offered
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will host online information sessions on implementing Act 13. That is the new state law governing shale well drilling.

Bessemer to be site of shale program
A public program and discussion on Marcellus Shale well drilling will be offered Tuesday in Bessemer. The event will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bessemer Fire Hall, corner of North Main Street and West Poland Avenue.
