NEW CASTLE —
The New Castle school board has made some changes to the dress code for the coming year.
Superintendent George Gabriel explained the code is adjusted each year, based on things teachers and administrators see in the hallways that they deem unacceptable or acceptable.
The existing dress code remains in effect, with these additions:
•Pants or bottoms may not be striped or two-tone.
•Warm-up pants in solid colors are now being allowed.
•Track suits are allowed only on game day.
•All pants must coincide with the student’s height and weight.
•Fashionable rips, tears and/or slices are not permitted in pants, shorts or any other clothing.
•Tops cannot have any stripes or color blocking.
•All shirts must coincide with the student’s height and weight.
•Tights, leotards or leggings — limited to the basic colors allowed in the code — can be worn only under a skirt or shorts.
•In-school suspension will be prescribed with the second and third offense of non-compliance.

Mohawk OKs tax abatement for racetrack
The Mohawk school board approved a five-year tax abatement for Endeka Entertainment. The abatement covers about 200 acres in Mahoning Township that is the site of the proposed harness racetrack and casino.

No tax increase expected at Mohawk
No tax increase is anticipated for the Mohawk school district. The board introduced a $21,714,781 budget for the 2013-14 school year that is 5 percent more than the current budget of $20,703,767.

Primary 2013: Former superintendent earns New Castle board nomination
Voters nominated four candidates for four-year terms in each of Lawrence County’s eight school districts yesterday. New Castle and Ellwood City had candidates running on one ballot only, but all others crossfiled, meaning they appeared on both Republican and Democratic ballots.

Four school districts are still deciding whether to support the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center’s 2013-14 budget. The New Castle, Wilmington, Mohawk and Ellwood City school boards are waiting until June to vote on the proposed spending plan as they contemplate a growing debt the center owes to six of its eight member school districts.
