Shenango seeks help for flood damage

NEW CASTLE — The Shenango Area School District is seeking federal assistance to cover the cost of flood damage from a July storm.

At its regular meeting on Monday, the school board designated Superintendent Dr. Michael Schreck as its agent to apply for the funds.

Schreck said the July 10 storm caused flood damage to the elementary playground and resulted in water damage to a high school classroom.

Schreck said representatives of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency will visit the district to assess the amount of damage.

He said FEMA would cover any damage not already covered by the district’s insurance.

The board approved an $882 payment to the Lawrence County Tax Collection Committee. The payment represents the district’s portion of the committee’s $20,000 operating budget for a three-year period that begins Jan. 1.

The committee, made up of delegates from the county’s eight school districts and 27 municipalities, was created under a state law that placed wage tax collections under one collector. The committee selected the tax collector and provides oversight, including having an annual audit performed.

The board also awarded tenure to Katherine Bartley, a 12th-grade English teacher.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
