During their meeting Dec. 20, the Union Township supervisors conducted the following business. All votes were 3-0 unless otherwise noted. In attendance were Supervisors Steve Galizia, Pat Angiolelli and Kevin Guinaugh.
•Approved payment of $30,317.35 in bills. Of that amount, $10,828.69 was paid to Cargill Inc. for road materials.
•Set the sewer rate at a minimum of $70 per quarter. Actual rates are tied to usage. The sewer rate is set by township’s sewer authority and requires the supervisors’ approval.
•Announced the state will repair two West Washington Street bridges next year.
•Agreed to keep the township’s cable franchise fee at $1.99 per month per cable subscriber through 2013. The township’s current agreement with Adelphia Cable ends in 2008. Galizia said the Federal Communications Commission requires cable companies to open franchise fee negotiations two years prior to the contract’s termination.
•Entered into an agreement with Code.Sys to handle residential and commercial code services for the township.
•Promoted Patrolman Michael Mrozek to full-time status. The vote was 2-1, with Guinaugh opposed. Mrozek will work the midnight shift.
•Ordained the second phase of real estate developer Angelo Medure’s development, Maple Heights.
•Discussed the township’s participation in the countywide food distribution program.

New Wilmington and Pulaski elementary students visited yesterday with children’s author Karen Lynn Williams. Williams spoke to the youngsters in three assemblies at New Wilmington.

Over and back: Neshannock basketball coach rebounding from frightening stroke
All John Corey wanted was a picture. Not much else mattered at this point. A day that, at first, allowed him to spend time with his wife and three kids, ended with him clinging to a family photo and wondering if he would ever see any of them again.

Mohawk students study at children’s center
Six Mohawk High school seniors are gaining extra knowledge outside the classroom. The students are participating in projects this term at the Oh Wow! Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology in Youngstown.

Lincoln to stage Shakespeare send-up
Lincoln High School will present the play “I Hate Shakespeare” at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday in the auditorium. The play takes a comedic look at some of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays, such as “Hamlet,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macbeth.”

Education task force to meet in Grove City
The Midwestern Local Task Force Right to Education meeting will be Feb. 9. The group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV in Grove City.

In The Schools: Neshannock settles with parent
The Neshannock Township School District has reached a settlement with the parent of a special-needs child. At its meeting this month, the board agreed to pay attorney’s fees and put money aside toward the boy’s education.

New Castle district to save with bond refinancing
The New Castle school district will save about a half-million dollars by refinancing a bond issue from 2006. At its meeting last week, the board unanimously approved a resolution to proceed with the refinancing at the recommendation of its bond counsel and financial adviser.

No injuries reported in school bus accident
No students were injured in an accident Friday afternoon involving a Mohawk school bus. According to superintendent Kathy Kwolek, the accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Martin Kelly Spears Road in Mahoning Township.

Students invited to enter distracted driving contest
Pennsylvania high school students are invited to enter a contest aimed at discouraging distracted driving. Students may submit a 30-second radio public service announcement and the winning announcement will be professionally produced and sent to the student’s local media market.
