George Washington Intermediate School
•After a language lesson on writing a personal letter, the fourth- and fifth-grade students in Michelle Bennett’s language class used their knowledge of the lesson to write a personal letter to Ambassador Walter J.P. Curley of New York.
Ambassador Curley was ambassador to Ireland and France under Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Ford, Carter, G.H. Bush, and Clinton. Within a week, students Chris Smith, Amber Musmanno, Keana Lazar, and Morgan Taylor received personalized letters answering all of their individual questions, along with a picture of Ambassador Curley.
The students enjoyed the lesson and were happy to receive a response so quickly.
Croton Prekindergarten
•Students in Jennifer Miller’s class, with the aid of Judi Fornataro, celebrated Thanksgiving in their classroom. The theme for the week was “Many Thanks.”
During the week, the students learned about the Pilgrims and Native Americans. The students prepared by making Pilgrim hats to wear for their Thanksgiving feast. The meal was Nov. 22 in the classroom. The feast was prepared by Patty Miller, a volunteer, and included turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, cranberries, stuffing, gravy, and pumpkin pie.
The students made turkey placemats to decorate the dinner table. Before eating, the students had the opportunity to tell the class what they were thankful for.
In conclusion, the students made a Thanksgiving card for their parents that stated what they were thankful for and each child signed their name.
The class also enjoyed Thanksgiving books such as “ ’Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving,” “The Most Thankful Thing,” “It’s Thanksgiving Day,” “The First Thanksgiving,” “Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks,” “Thanksgiving in the Barn,” and “It’s Thanksgiving.”

•Marisa Stillwagon’s prekindergarten class held its own Thanksgiving feast last week.
Students learned about the meaning of Thanksgiving by listening to books, stories, rhymes and finger plays. The class then dressed up in Pilgrim and Indian costumes.
Students prepared their own foods to eat and rotated through centers making items such as turkey sandwiches, mashed potatoes, harvest snack mix, pumpkin ice cream and pilgrim punch. Students followed directions and used their measuring skills to prepare the foods.
The class also learned how to set the table by matching eating utensils to identical pictures drawn on their place mats.

Write stuff: Children’s author visits Wilmington youngsters
New Wilmington and Pulaski elementary students visited yesterday with children’s author Karen Lynn Williams. Williams spoke to the youngsters in three assemblies at New Wilmington.

Over and back: Neshannock basketball coach rebounding from frightening stroke
All John Corey wanted was a picture. Not much else mattered at this point. A day that, at first, allowed him to spend time with his wife and three kids, ended with him clinging to a family photo and wondering if he would ever see any of them again.

Mohawk students study at children’s center
Six Mohawk High school seniors are gaining extra knowledge outside the classroom. The students are participating in projects this term at the Oh Wow! Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology in Youngstown.

Lincoln to stage Shakespeare send-up
Lincoln High School will present the play “I Hate Shakespeare” at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday in the auditorium. The play takes a comedic look at some of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays, such as “Hamlet,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macbeth.”

Education task force to meet in Grove City
The Midwestern Local Task Force Right to Education meeting will be Feb. 9. The group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV in Grove City.

In The Schools: Neshannock settles with parent
The Neshannock Township School District has reached a settlement with the parent of a special-needs child. At its meeting this month, the board agreed to pay attorney’s fees and put money aside toward the boy’s education.

New Castle district to save with bond refinancing
The New Castle school district will save about a half-million dollars by refinancing a bond issue from 2006. At its meeting last week, the board unanimously approved a resolution to proceed with the refinancing at the recommendation of its bond counsel and financial adviser.

No injuries reported in school bus accident
No students were injured in an accident Friday afternoon involving a Mohawk school bus. According to superintendent Kathy Kwolek, the accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Martin Kelly Spears Road in Mahoning Township.

I didn’t play for Lindy Lauro. I wasn’t good enough. And so when his daughter and namesake, Lindy, asked me to give a eulogy, I was humbled and honored. There are so many others who are more worthy to speak of his greatness.

Students invited to enter distracted driving contest
Pennsylvania high school students are invited to enter a contest aimed at discouraging distracted driving. Students may submit a 30-second radio public service announcement and the winning announcement will be professionally produced and sent to the student’s local media market.
