New Castle, Mohawk schedule kindergarten registration

NEW CASTLE — NEW CASTLE

The district will begin registering students for the Croton pre-kindergarten program on Monday, Tuesday and March 14.

Registration will be done from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the Croton school, 420 Fern St.

District officials said early registration is critical to avoid being placed on a waiting list for enrollment.

To register for pre-kindergarten, a student must be 4 years old by Sept. 1. Parents or guardians must present proof of residence in the district for enrollment. In addition, a birth certificate and immunization record are required.

The pre-kindergarten program is offered in morning and afternoon sessions — 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Bus transportation is provided for district students.

Non-district residents may register with an assessed tuition rate. That information is available by calling the business office at (724) 656-4768.

Anyone with questions regarding enrollment for the 2013-14 school year may contact the district at (724) 656-4815.

MOHAWK

Kindergarten registration has been scheduled for district children who will be 5 years old before Sept. 1.

Screenings will be conducted on May 7 and 8 at the elementary school.

Those wishing to register a child in kindergarten should contact the school to pick up an enrollment packet. That packet must be filled out completely and returned in order to schedule a screening.

More information is available by calling the school at (724) 667-7782, extension 1100 between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Our Opinion: State audit says city school district failed to collect from non-residents

Audit information about non-resident students who didn’t pay tuition at New Castle raises more questions than it answers. At least so far. We expect more details when the Pennsylvania auditor general’s office completes its report and the New Castle school district provides its response.

  • school.jpg In The Schools: Keystone Exam could up graduation stakes

The typical Pennsylvania student will spend more than 46 hours taking standardized state tests during his or her academic career. That equals more than a week’s worth of school and does not take into account the amount of time that schools spend specifically preparing for tests or helping students who have failed standardized tests.
