NEW CASTLE —
The Laurel School Board has approved the refinancing of a 2007 bond issue.
The refinancing, which is not to exceed $11 million, is projected to save the district $622,000 because of current low interest rates.
Laurel used the bond issue for construction at the junior/senior high school.
The board also:
•Awarded a contract to Gurtner Construction of Pittsburgh for $96,200 to replace windows in the bottom, rear section of the junior/senior high school.
•Approved a leave of absence for April Edwards-Elliott, a secondary teacher, beginning Feb. 29, and followed by a Family Medical Leave for the remainder of the current school year and the entire 2012-13 school year. She intends to return to her position for the 2013-14 school year.
•Approved the 2012-13 Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV general operating budget of $3,876,808.

Vo-tech budget an issue for interim director
The first order of business for the new vo-tech school interim director may be to address the 2013-14 budget. The Lawrence County Career and Technical Center’s spending plan must be passed by at least six school boards in the county and a majority of the 72 members on the eight school boards in the county must vote yes.

The Ellwood City school board adopted the district’s 2013-14 budget with no increase in taxes. The budget totals $26,512,279. Property taxes are set at 15.81 mills.

New president to lead Catholic school system
The Rev. Michael P. Allison has been named president of the Shenango Valley Catholic School System, effective July 7. The system includes Kennedy Catholic High School, Kennedy Catholic Middle School and Blessed John Paul II Elementary School, all in Hermitage.
