School to honor war hero with renaming

NEW CASTLE — The Ellwood City school district is renaming its auditorium after a fallen war hero.

A formal ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Friday at Lincoln High School to name the auditorium the Leslie H. Sabo Jr. Memorial Auditorium.

Sabo was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on May 16, 2012.

The former Ewing Park Bridge in Ellwood City is now known as the Sgt. Leslie H. Sabo Memorial Bridge. It was renamed in observance of Veteran’s Day this month.

A former Ellwood City resident, Sabo was killed in action in Cambodia in 1970. His family was presented with the Medal of Honor by President Obama. The recognition came years after Sabo was recommended for the nation’s top medal because the Pentagon had lost track of his paperwork until a fellow veteran doing research rediscovered it.

According to Army reports from the time, Sabo, a specialist four, was 22 when his platoon was ambushed. The record describes how he personally attacked enemy troops, drawing fire away from fellow soldiers. He also is credited with saving the life of a wounded soldier by picking up a grenade and tossing it away. While injured, Sabo attacked an enemy bunker with a grenade and was killed during that assault.

The Medal of Honor is awarded to members of the armed forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

The New Castle school district is often a study in contrasts. There are complaints about the district on everything from taxes to nepotism, from test scores to ethical slights. Yet at the same time, plenty of students within the district excel. It’s a tribute to the hard work of those students, their families and the educators who support them.

The Lawrence County commissioners have decided to solicit proposals for the private operation of the county jail. Good idea?

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
Not sure. The county seems to be doing a good job of running the jail now. Why break it if it’s not broken?
