Photos, Video: Take Your Child to Work Day at The News

NEW CASTLE — David Kolodziej spent the day at the New Castle News with his father, Tim who is director of New Media for the company.

Among the activities David took part in were:

•Helping to update the newspaper’s website.

•Meeting reporters, editors and photographers.

•Sitting in on a meeting of the newspaper’s department heads.

•Talking with publisher Larry Corvi.

•Watching the newspaper press run at West Penn Printing.

•Watching how the editors paginate the paper.

“It was cool,” David said of his day.

    A former New Castle man could be among the first to set foot on Mars. Dr. Andrew Morgan, 37, is among eight selected by NASA for this year’s astronaut candidate class. The eight-member group — four men and four women — were selected from more than 6,300 applicants.

    The first order of business for the new vo-tech school interim director may be to address the 2013-14 budget. The Lawrence County Career and Technical Center’s spending plan must be passed by at least six school boards in the county and a majority of the 72 members on the eight school boards in the county must vote yes.

  • Ellwood OKs budget with no tax hike

    The Ellwood City school board adopted the district’s 2013-14 budget with no increase in taxes. The budget totals $26,512,279. Property taxes are set at 15.81 mills.

    The Lawrence County Career and Technical Center has a new interim director. Domenic J. Ionta was named to the post Thursday night to lead the school while it searches for a permanent executive director.

    The Neshannock school board adopted a $16.6 million budget for next year with no tax increase. The 2013-14 spending plan is $464,067 greater than the current year’s budget.

    Mohawk’s school board approved a contract to repair air conditioning at the elementary school. School board members, meeting in a special session Monday, awarded the $88,390 pact to Central Heating and Plumbing, the lowest of three bids received.
