NEW CASTLE —
The Shenango school board has set a ceiling for a tax increase it could impose next year.
The board adopted a resolution Tuesday indicating it will not raise the property tax for the 2013-14 school year above the 2.4 percent index set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The index is the percentage the district can increase the property tax without voter approval.
A 2.4 percent increase is equal to 0.296 mills. The tax is currently 12.36 mills.
Adoption of the resolution does not mean the board will raise the tax by that amount or at all, according to superintendent Dr. Michael Schreck.
The board approved a five-year transportation contract with STA of Pennsylvania Inc.
Schreck said the contract calls for a freeze in the district’s cost for the 2013-14 school year and increases averaging 2.5 percent in each of the following four years.
The board also approved an increase in mileage reimbursement to the IRS approved rate of 56.5 cents per mile. It represents a one-cent increase.
