Arby’s to host McCarthy fundraiser

NEW CASTLE — Arby’s will host a fundraiser Thursday in memory of Shenango Township police officer William J. “Jerry” McCarthy.

Between 4 and 7 p.m., 15 percent of the restaurants’ proceeds will be donated to a new scholarship fund in his name.

The event includes all three Arby’s restaurants in Lawrence County, as well as those in Hermitage, Greenville and two in Beaver County.

The Shenango Township Police Department has established the nonprofit memorial scholarship fund. Police Superintendent William Phillips said the goal is to grant one $1,000 scholarship per year, preferably to a Shenango student.

The department also hopes to donate $1,000 a year to an animal rescue organization in the county.

McCarthy, a part-timer with Shenango, also was a Lawrence County humane officer. He was killed in a traffic accident while on duty May 2.

“We want this fund to exist for at least 30 years,” Phillips said.

“We’ve taken care of the families as best we could, now we’re directing all other funds to a purpose to keeping Jerry’s memory alive.”

The department sold memorial T-shirts to raise money for the fund and numerous people have made donations, he said.

A bank account named the Shenango Memorial T-shirt Fund is where money for the scholarship is being held.

Donations may be sent directly to: Shenango Memorial T-shirt Fund, Huntington Bank, Lawrence Village Plaza, 2650 Ellwood Road, New Castle, Pa. 16101.
