Head of New Tribes Mission to speak at New Covenant

New Castle News

Larry Brown’s mission is direct. As the chief executive officer of New Tribes Mission, Brown’s passion is to bring “the gospel to the unreached people groups who have yet to hear about Christ.” Brown will be the guest speaker Sunday at New Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 1911 Harlansburg Road. There he will share that passion to reach the unreached, and explain how New Tribes Mission is going about achieving that goal. Brown will address both the 8 and 10 a.m. services, with a time of questions and answers following each presentation. Anyone wishing to learn more about New Tribes Mission is welcome to attend. New Tribes have missionaries in 40 countries worldwide, with nearly 3,500 people in the field right now. They have planted more than 900 churches among nearly 300 people groups. The groups has made its priority to plant churches among those who have no access to the Bible, and in most cases have never even heard of Jesus Christ. That goal has led New Tribes missionaries to some of the most remote and dangerous places in the world. Places such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines are among the many countries that play host to New Tribes missionaries. New Tribes, which began 65 years ago, continues to go wherever there are people unreached, regardless of the danger or difficulty. That commitment to spreading the word of God has not come without a price, however. Several New Tribes missionaries have been kidnapped or held hostage, tragically, not all have survived. Yet, in spite of those dangers, each year nearly 550 new missionaries accept the call, and after an extensive two-year training course, they head to the remotest corners of the world to share the message of Jesus salvation with those who have never heard it before. Students entering the mission field train in the language and culture of the peoples they are visiting. They participate in translating the Bible into the language of that people group, and learn the most effective ways to help this group to develop a church tailored to their own community. “We are not interested in setting up western churches everywhere,” Brown said. “We believe if they come to Christ, the Lord will equip them to lead their own church in their cultural context.” According to Brown, New Tribes expects to see at least a 5 percent growth by the year 2020, and is actively seeking to expand its outreaches across the globe. New Tribes Mission is a non-denominational organization that partners with 7,400 American Churches of nearly every Evangelical denomination. “It’s not about New Tribes,” Brown said. “It’s about the local churches. We see ourselves as an extension of the local churches.” One of those local churches is New Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian, pastored by the Rev. George Yates. He explained that his church has been sponsoring New Tribes since the church’s inception in 1995. “Larry and New Tribes are well-respected for their years of service and the work they have done,” Yates said. For Brown, he considers the visit to New Covenant another opportunity to share his challenge to all American churches. “That challenge is to keep in their strategy a place to reach the unreached,” Brown said. “The American church spends 98 percent of its activity, effort and funds on the already reached populations, but only 2 percent of funds and resources are spent on 1/3 of the world’s population, the unreached people groups. “We have a responsibility to reach those unreached peoples.” And New Tribes Mission is striving to make that happen.
