NEW CASTLE —
The old Couch Potato is a huge sports fan, but as I've gotten older, I have been watching less and less on television.
Last year, I wrote a whole article on the joys of watching the Pirates play, but I've barely even watched this summer for some reason.
Now that the World Cup has kicked into high gear, it has dominated the ESPN family of channels, but I will say that it does not interest me all that much. I think the American team is overrated, and soccer is pretty boring to watch on television.
That being said, I can admit that World Cup does have a unifying effect. Our country is not much of a soccer nation, but the World Cup has been the center of the public conversation and there have been huge numbers of people turning out at stadiums to watch the games on the big screen.
Even though it's not my cup of tea, I can appreciate the the effect it has had on people and our country.
Anything that can bring people together can't be all that bad, even if it is boring old soccer.
