Child porn charges filed against optometrist
A Slippery Rock man with a New Castle optometry practice has been charged with receiving and possessing child pornography. According to court records, Mark Beres, 53, of 445 Center St., also admitted to engaging in sexual contact with three boys.

Woman charged with embezzling $100,000-plus from church credit union
A Lawrence County woman has been indicted on a charge of embezzlement from a credit union. The one-count indictment was returned Tuesday by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton.

Dog owner charged in attack
A pit bull owner has been cited after his dog allegedly attacked another dog that was secured on a chain. The incident occurred on Countyline Road around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

City man facing drug charges
A lower East Side man allegedly tried to sell drugs to an off-duty officer on the street. Police charged David Richard McLaren Jr., 34, of 230 N. Walnut St. in connection with the incident, which occurred around 10:45 p.m. Monday near the Lawrence County courthouse.

No injuries reported when car hits pole
No injuries were reported when a car hit and sheared off a utility pole on Long Avenue. New Castle police reported Melissa Marie Ashour, 32, of 433 E. Long Ave. struck the pole around 2:30 a.m. April 24 and it was lying across Long Avenue when the officer arrived.

Man charged with sexual assault of girl
A Scott Township man has been charged by state police with multiple counts of sexual assault on a 13-year-old.

City man facing trespass charge
A North Hill man is facing a trespassing charge for allegedly cooking in a vacant house. Police said Jalen Bailey, 18, of 720 Blaine St. was one of three men allegedly inside the house on the same block around 4 p.m. Sunday.

A man and woman have been charged by Mahoning Township police in the burglary of a home on Tuesday.

Fire marshal to probe vacant house fire
The state police fire marshal has been called to investigate a vacant house fire in Union Township. Firefighters were called to 1 Ann St. at 11:07 p.m. on Wednesday. They remained at the scene until 2:30 a.m. yesterday.

Authorities raid suspected East Side drug house
The house at 920 E. Washington St. was the subject of repeated complaints from neighbors, according to police. The Lawrence County Drug Task Force, the District Attorney’s special investigative unit and the New Castle police raided the house yesterday morning, seizing drugs and arresting Mary Adaleine O’Brien, 48, the owner and occupant.
