Man arrested in alleged assault, gun theft

NEW CASTLE — A North Hill man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a gun and assaulting a woman.

Police have charged Steven Stunkard, 36, of 601 Norwood Ave. in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred around 10:30 p.m. Thursday at his home.

A woman who was at Stunkard’s house reported he had stolen her Sig Sauer .38-caliber handgun and left in a red Honda Civic.

She told police Stunkard had assaulted her after she had found drug paraphernalia that belonged to him in her car and confronted him about it. She said he left, but returned and kicked open the front door, damaging it.

While she was in the kitchen, she said, he shoved her in the face and they continued arguing in the bedroom where he forced her onto the floor, causing her to scrape her elbows on a laundry basket.

She told officers he had left again in her car and she searched the house for her gun and realized it was missing, police said. She said she had called Stunkard, asking if he had taken the gun and he said he had and would return it and put it in the wheel well of the car. She told him she was going to call the police.

Officers found Stunkard and the car in a parking lot around 11 p.m. He was arrested, and officers found a used hypodermic needle with suspected heroin residue on it in his pants pocket, police said.

Stunkard is charged with theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, harassment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who set his bond at $5,000.
