NEW CASTLE — A man who police said is an illegal alien was arrested after he had been knocking at a Vine Street house.

Alfredo Cleofas Castill, 30, of 1509 Pennsylvania Ave. is charged with loitering and prowling at night and criminal mischief in connection with the incident. The resident found his mailbox pulled off the house.

New Castle police were called to the home around 3 a.m. Wednesday for a report of someone banging on a door. The 911 dispatcher told police the resident told the man he had three seconds to get off his porch before he shoots.

The mailbox was on a sidewalk in front of the house, police said, and a tarp from an outdoor table was in the driveway. The owner told officers a case of bottled water had been opened and bottles were found outside.

Police said Castill remained on the front porch of the house and he smelled of alcohol. Officers found his Mexico identification cards and contacted Immmigration and Customs. A Homeland Security representative said Castill is in the country illegally.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who set his bond at $1,000. He posted bail.
