NEW CASTLE —
•Driving under the influence. Police said they stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation and moving violations at 1:30 a.m. Jan. 20 at Mitchell Road and Spiker Lane. They said the driver, Wynn A. Hassan, 58, of 3440 Carmela Drive failed a field sobriety test, was arrested and taken to Jameson Hospital for a blood test. Based on the results of that test, officers charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as several vehicle violations.
•Driving under the influence. Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Randy J. Gillette, 20, of 302 E. Fairmont Ave. Jan. 26 on Hazelcroft Avenue for an equipment violation. According to officers, Gillette was driving without a valid license and was allegedly under the influence of marijuana. He was placed under arrest and taken to Jameson Hospital for a blood test.

Drunk driving suspect tied to double fatal
A man charged with drunk driving in New Wilmington was the driver in a 2009 double-fatality crash. New Wilmington police said they learned Austin J. Ewers, 20, has a record that includes homicide by vehicle after they arrested him in the borough Nov. 24.
Second body this week found at Moraine
The body of a New Castle man was found at Moraine State Park. Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, said someone who had been boating and fishing from a kayak on Lake Arthur saw something on the shore at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and contacted park officials.

New Castle City Council has approved an agreement that details city narcotics officers to the Lawrence County district attorney’s office.
Man jumps into Shenango River
New Castle police and fire departments were dispatched Wednesday morning after a man jumped into the Shenango River. Police were called at 11:35 a.m. and the fire department was notified about 10 minutes later.
Man facing drug charges
Charges filed against a city man stem from a July arrest, when police allegedly found him with marijuana. Dorian Allen Cullen, 31, of 209 E. Pearson St., is wanted for one count each of disorderly conduct, public drunkenness, criminal trespass, manufacture of a controlled substance and possession or distribution of a small amount of marijuana, and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Stabbing victims out of hospital, charges pending
A father and son stabbed on the South Side last week are out of the hospital. New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said the men are being interviewed and he expects charges to be filed later in the week.
Pair assists woman in escape from smoky bedroom
A woman was rescued Friday evening after reporting smoke in her mobile home. Cindy Zarlingo of 275 Dominick Lane, Mahoning Township, called 911 at 8:54 p.m. stating there was smoke in her bedroom and she was unable to get out.
Police identify victims in fatal Amish buggy crash
State police say a mother and her daughter died in a fatal collision between a truck and a horse-drawn Amish buggy. Authorities say 34-year-old Mary Byler, of New Wilmington, and her 11-year-old daughter, whose name was withheld, died in the crash Saturday on Pulaski-Mercer Road, Wilmington Township, Mercer County.
