NEW CASTLE —
A dog appears to be in good shape after being rescued from icy waters at Bessemer Lake Park yesterday.
Bessemer Fire Chief Jim Nelson said firefighters received a call around 1 p.m. from a resident who lives by the lake that a dog had fallen through the ice.
Approximately nine firefighters responded and used a boat to get to the black Labrador Retriever mix that was stranded in the middle of the lake. However, the dog was too big to get in the boat and firefighters had to place a lasso around him and dragged him to shore.
Once on land, a firefighter put a sweatshirt around the dog, placed him in a truck and took him to the fire station.
Nelson said the dog had been in the water for about an hour.
“It seems to be in good shape,” Nelson said. “It’s a strong, healthy dog. He ate a bowl of food and drank about a half bowl of water.”
The dog had no identification tags and the fire department was in the process of trying to track down the owner through the Rapid Response system in the borough, Nelson said.
He added that the lake in some places is about 40 feet deep.
