YDC resident charged in assault

NEW CASTLE — A Youth Development Center teen is charged as an adult for overcoming a van driver, then crashing the vehicle.

State police said that Erick Robert Lee, 17, who is committed to the YDC, was being transported in a van at the compound on Frew Mill Road in Shenango Township on Jan. 19, when he reached behind the wheel and choked the driver and struck him in the head.

The driver was able to break free and get out of the car, police said. Lee then took possession of the van, which is owned by the YDC, and drove it recklessly through the YDC grounds and crashed it into a tree. The van was totaled, police said.

Lee is charged as an adult with aggravated assault, robbery of a motor vehicle, robbery with inflicting bodily injury, theft, criminal mischief, and robbery with taking property from another by force.

He was arraigned on Feb. 13 by District Judge David B. Rishel, who set his bond at $50,000.

His preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been continued until March 27 in Central Court.
