Man accused of lying about auto accident

NEW CASTLE — Police said a man involved in an accident faces more serious charges after they allege he lied about the incident.

Shane Hines, 32, of Pulaski is accused of making false reports to police, driving while under the influence of alcohol and various traffic violations after his 2004 Jeep was found crashed early Sunday along I-376 East, at the Sampson Street exit ramp.

State police were called to investigate the one-vehicle accident. They found the Jeep seriously damaged, but no driver.

They went to home of the owner, Hines, to interview him. He said he had been “bar hopping” that night, and had been driven back to the area by a woman he had met at a bar in Mercer. He said he was dropped near the intersection of I-376 and Route 422, where he had been picked up that night for public drunkenness.

At that point, police said, Hines told them his vehicle had been stolen from the Mercer bar.

While investigating, officers said, they were contacted by Hines, who then admitted he had crashed his vehicle and fled. He added he had contacted his insurance company to report his vehicle stolen and recovered by police.
