Woman charged following downtown fight, stabbings

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle woman faces aggravated assault and other charges after she allegedly stabbed two other women early Sunday.

Georgia Marie Murphy, 50, of 409 Denver St. was charged after an incident at the Capitol Grill, 108 N. Mercer St. that involved as many as 60 people.

Reports indicated shots had been fired during the incident, but officers said apparently no one was hit by the gunfire.

New Castle police received a call around 1 a.m. about a fight at the bar and shots being fired. The first officer at the scene reported there were about 60 people fighting in the street.

Officers began to disperse the crowd and gather evidence — two knives and two .40-caliber shell casings were recovered. Police later learned three women had gone to Jameson Hospital with knife wounds.

Officers interviewed the victims there and one identified Murphy as her attacker. A second said she would not identify who had stabbed her, while the third said Murphy was not near her when she was stabbed.

One of the victims had a stab wound to her buttocks that doctors said was nearly 9 inches long and 2 inches deep. Another had a shallow wound to the right arm about four to five inches long, police said, while the third had a laceration to her right hand, about two to three inches long.

The victims reported there had been a party at the bar and one of them indicated the fight began when one woman bumped into another. A brawl erupted and eventually spilled outside.

Police said they took Murphy into custody while she was still at the Capitol Grill. She was arraigned Sunday by District Judge Melissa Amodie on two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangering and harassment, as well as one count each of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Murphy was lodged in the Lawrence County jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Do you talk to yourself when you're alone?

Yes, but I’m basically just thinking out loud.
No, that would be weird.
I don’t know. Next time I’m alone, I’ll ask.
