Fire damages North Hill home

NEW CASTLE — An early morning fire Saturday damaged a house on New Castle’s North Hill.

When city firefighters arrived at the house at 1405 N. Mercer St. shortly after 6 a.m., they saw flames coming from the second floor window.

The resident was not home at the time of the blaze, according to the fire department.

The department said an investigation by the city police fire investigator points to the cause being electrical, originating in insulation that burned on wires of a motorized scooter plugged into an outlet on the first floor.

The fire went upwards, burning a large hole in the second floor to a bedroom, the department said.

Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours.

Damage was estimated at $40,000. The house is owned by Jerry Pace, the department said.

At 5:02 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a small blaze at 411 Blaine St.

The department said wires from a refrigerator had caught on fire by the outlet. The electricity was turned off and firefighters put out the fire with a water extinguisher.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 fell from the sky in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard. Many are speculating that Russian rebels (supported by Vladimir Putin) are responsible for downing the aircraft. What do you think?

Yes. All evidence points that way.
No. Everyone is so quick to point fingers, but there's not enough evidence to support claims of Russian guilt.
I'm not sure. I'll just wait until the investigation is over to make up my mind.
What is up with these Malaysian Airlines planes? I know one airline I won't be flying any time soon...
