NEW CASTLE —
A former Hermitage industrial firm employee has been charged with embezzling more than $1 million.
Jeanne M. Zacherl, 64, of 1272 Mercer-West Middlesex Road, East Lackawannock Township, told police she “gambled the money away,” officers said.
Zacherl turned herself in Tuesday morning on two charges of theft, police said.
Interstate Chemical Co., 2792 Freedland Road, reported Oct. 9 that Zacherl, accounts payable manager with 22 years of service, was believed to have stolen money, police said.
Zacherl created fictitious vendor accounts and transferred money into them 44 times between Oct. 15, 2008, and Sept. 19, police said. She would then transfer the money into her personal account, according to police.
In an interview with officers Oct. 10, Zacherl admitted stealing more than $1 million over seven years, police said.
Her husband drove a truck for the company for 27 years, but did not know of her participate in her illegal activities, police said she told them.
Zacherl gambled the money away in $10 slots at Mountaineer Casino, Race Track and Resort in Chester, W.Va., police said.
The total amount she is accused of stealing is $1,126,763.
Zacherl was arraigned by District Judge Ronald E. Antos in Farrell, and released after posting bond. Antos set a preliminary hearing for Thursday.
