New Castle man killed in Mercer County crash

NEW CASTLE — A New Castle man died Tuesday after losing control of his cement truck in Mercer County.

Pennsylvania state police said James Arthur Minteer, 51, of 935 Marshall Ave., was westbound on Route 318 in Lackawannock Township about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control on a left curve.

Police said the truck left the road, traveling through a ditch to a cement culvert. The truck then went back onto the road and overturned onto its passenger side. Police said the truck slid down both lanes of the highway, striking a Buick LeSabre driven by Kenneth D. Millison, 84, of Hermitage.

The impact caused the cement truck to rotate in a counterclockwise direction, police said, and slide further down the highway, coming to rest in both lanes facing north-northeast.

Following impact with the truck, police said, Millison’s car traveled backwards into a ditch on the south side of the road.

Police said an axle of the cement truck became detached when the truck overturned, striking Millison’s car.

Dr. David Hoyt, Mercer County deputy coroner, pronounced Minteer dead at the scene. He said death was the result of blunt force trauma to the chest. Police said Minteer was not wearing a seat belt.

Millison reported minor injury. His passenger, Shirley C. Millison, 81, also of Hermitage, reported no injury. The Millisons were both wearing seat belts, police said.

State police were assisted by East End and Jefferson Township volunteer fire departments, Jefferson Township police department, Mercer Auto Wreckers, Kress Towing, Superior Ambulance, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Stat Medevac.
