NEW CASTLE —
Five kittens and an adult cat were missing but presumed safe after a fire Tuesday afternoon on the East Side.
Mike Petrone, New Castle’s assistant fire chief, said he suspects the cause of the blaze at 815 Lathrop St. was electric.
The fire heavily damaged one bedroom, Petrone said. He also noted there was also smoke and water damage to other parts of the house. However, he did not have a damage estimate.
As for the cats, Petrone said he had seen one kitten running downstairs when he arrived. He said he was confident all the animals were safe and simply hiding because they had not been found in the damaged room.
The owners of the house, Sandy and Roger Beatty and their son, Ryan, were not injured.
Sandy Beatty said she had heard a crackling noise and suspected the kittens had gotten into mischief. She started up the stairs to investigate, she said, but was met with heavy smoke.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from one window, Petrone said, and they could see flames inside. They put the fire out in about 20 minutes. Three firetrucks and two other fire vehicles were on the scene.
