DNA testing leads to rape charges

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police have filed multiple sexual assault charges against a Florida man in a 2012 case.

The charges stem from a semen sample taken from the victim and a computerized search of DNA records on file with law enforcement.

Donovan B. Ford, 40, of Fort Lauderdale and a former New Castle resident, is accused of raping a woman while she was unconscious.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the office of District Judge Jennifer Nicholson, police were first notified of the incident in November, when a woman described an incident that allegedly occurred at Ford’s West North Street home.

The woman said she and a female friend had been at the house and drank vodka and cranberry juice, then became sick. The woman said she passed out.

When she awoke, the woman said, Ford was in the room and she was naked. She later went to Jameson Hospital, where a rape kit was used to collect samples.

It was not until February that the crime lab in Greensburg reported to city police that semen had been found with the testing. In August, further testing ruled out the victim’s boyfriend as the source of the semen.

New Castle police conducted a computer search of the DNA sample in the semen and the Combined Offender Index System produced a match with Ford’s DNA on record, police said.

Charges filed against Ford are rape of an unconscious person, indecent sexual intercourse with an unconscious person, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault of an unconscious person and indecent assault of an unconscious person.
