NEW CASTLE —
The Lawrence County Humane Society is offering a reward in the case of the cat who was hanged and burned.
Susan Thompson, humane society board member, said the board has authorized a $200 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
“We want to know who did this,” she said. “We thought this could get the ball rolling. There are some sick people out there.”
The white and gray cat was treated at the North Memorial Animal Hospital and it seems she will survive.
The animal now has a name — Hope — a temporary home, friends seeking a permanent home for her and an appointment for next week to determine if she will need more medical attention. Most of her wounds are to her neck and back.
The cat was found Sunday night in the High Street area. It is not known when the incident took place.
Union Township police are asking the community for help to identify the individual who had abused the animal.
Thompson said that several years ago, someone had hanged a cat in the Graceland Cemetery area. That person was never found, she said.
“That was an isolated area,” she said. “In Union Township, houses are closer together. We hope someone saw or knows what happened and will contact us.”
A spokeswoman at North Memorial Animal Hospital said the cat was named by the man who found her and has been discharged to his care. She will return next week for a re-evaluation.
Area residents are invited to contribute for the cat’s medical care.
“Bills could be extensive, depending on how well she heals and what other procedures she might need,” the spokeswoman said.
She could not estimate what the bill might be, but said the veterinarian, Dr. Maureen Altman, has set up a fund for Hope at the clinic.
Anyone interested in contributing may send donations to North Memorial Animal Hospital, 143 State Route 18, New Wilmington, Pa. 16142.
Anyone who can provide police with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible is asked to contact Union Township police at (724) 652-5203.
