Officers seize crack cocaine in bust

NEW CASTLE — Narcotics officers seized an estimated $4,000 worth of suspected crack cocaine in a bust they called “Operation Ballot Box.”

Members of the Lawrence County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, the New Castle police special response team and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms served a sealed search warrant around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday at 415 Epworth St., where they roused Charles Dennis and Clent Carrington from two couches in a front room.

Dennis, 33, is the resident listed at that address. Carrington, 33, is listed as living at 308 Bell Ave.

Police said suspected crack cocaine, a digital scale and money were in plain view on the floor.

Both men were arrested and booked in the Lawrence County jail late Tuesday afternoon.

The police search of the house resulted in the confiscation of alleged drug paraphernalia, five bags of suspected crack cocaine, a bag of marijuana, $154 next to the scale and suspected drug packaging material.

According to District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa, the crack cocaine weighed a total of 39 grams.

City police have charged both Carrington and Dennis with one count each of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver, and two counts each of possession of a controlled substance, criminal conspiracy to commit possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were arraigned by District Judge Melissa Amodie who set their bonds at $100,000 each.

Lamancusa said the amount of crack cocaine that was seized carries mandatory sentences of no less than three years if convicted.

He said the two men are considered mid-level drug dealers.

According to Lamancusa, this was the district attorney’s office and city police department’s 23rd drug-related search warrant served this year. He said the bust came about as a result of an undercover investigation.
