Second body this week found at Moraine

NEW CASTLE — The body of a New Castle man was found at Moraine State Park.

Jake Weiland, assistant park manager, said someone who had been boating and fishing from a kayak on Lake Arthur saw something on the shore at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and contacted park officials.

Weiland said the body of Alvah R. Strickenburg III, 43, of East Garfield Avenue, was found in a wooded area.

He said Pennsylvania state police and Dennis Trzeciak, Butler County deputy coroner, were called. It was determined that death was a suicide, Weiland said.

The office of Butler County Coroner William Young said it would not provide details of the death.

Weiland said the body had been located on the North Shore of the lake, about 100 yards from the McDanel’s Boat Launch.

“It appears that he drove to the launch and walked into a heavily wooded area, but a site that was visible from the lake.”

He added this was the second body recovered at the state park this week. On Tuesday, the body of Nicholas Sopel, 62, of Lyndora was found. He had been the object of a search for about three weeks.
