NEW CASTLE —
A 17-year-old from Worth Township was killed in a three-car crash on Route 62 in Coolspring Township.
One of the vehicles involved was driven by New Wilmington man.
Samantha Lynn Coast of 274 Jackson Center-Polk Road was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, according to John Libonati, Mercer County deputy coroner.
An autopsy was not ordered and the Lakeview High School and Mercer County Career Center senior was determined to have died of chest and head injuries, he said.
State police said Coast was a passenger in a car driven by William J. Cupic, 18, of Mercer, who was southbound just about 5:50 p.m. when he spun on the wet road into the oncoming lane.
The car collided with a northbound pickup driven by Wendell Boyd, 73, of New Wilmington, and continued to spin until it collided with a northbound pickup driven by James Boughner, 33, of Jackson Center, police said.
Neither Coast nor Cupic was wearing a seat belt, police said.
A state police special investigation unit is reconstructing the crash.
State police issued a news release about the crash but identified the deceased only as a juvenile female. Trooper Adam Reed, a public information officer at state police headquarters in Harrisburg, said state police only release the names of juveniles who are charged as adults with crimes.
Identifying a minor killed in a car crash would be “against our regulations.”
Reed said he does not know the rationale for the policy or why it would apply to someone not charged with a crime in a newsworthy event such as a fatal car crash.
“I definitely see where you’re coming from,” he said. “Unfortunately, we can’t do it.”
