Man charged as store burglary accomplice

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police have arrested a South Side man for his alleged role in a convenience store burglary.

Alex John Benkosky, 21, of 821 S. Mercer St., is accused as an accomplice in the March 26 break-in at the Country Fair on Croton Avenue.

He also was charged Monday in connection with the burglary of a house in his neighborhood.

Police learned of his involvement in the store break-in last week from Benkosky’s father. He told officers Benkosky had been to his house and told him of the Country Fair burglary and other crimes.

He said his son told him he had thrown a brick through the window of the store and stole cigarettes.

Police arrested Benkosky on a warrant Tuesday. He told investigators he had been helping a man as the lookout and was to get packs of cigarettes, according to police.

Benkosky said he had walked back and forth on the sidewalk and was supposed to whistle if the police came. He told officers the other man threw something through the window, then they left and waited to see if an alarm sounded.

According to police, Benkosky said the man went back to the store with a hammer and stole numerous packs of cigarettes. They said he told them the man had paid him with three packs of cigarettes.

Benkosky is charged with conspiracy to commit both burglary and theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief in connection with that incident. He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who set his bond at $5,000.

The charges filed Monday are burglary, criminal trespass, fleeing police and criminal mischief for allegedly breaking into the house in his neighborhood.

Amodie set his bond at $50,000 for that incident, and he is lodged in the Lawrence County jail.
