NEW CASTLE — A vacant house on the city’s West Side burned over the weekend.

The New Castle police department fire investigator has been called to determine what caused a blaze at 418 Conn St., near Bell Avenue.

City firefighters were called at 12:35 a.m. Saturday and remained until about 2 a.m. They called the fire “intentional.”

Firefighters said one side of the building was involved when they arrived. The fire, which began on the outside of the building, spread up the wall to the second floor and into the attic.

Firefighters said the house, which had included a spiral staircase and ornate banister, was considered a total loss. They added the building had been vacant and no damage estimate could be provided because of its dilapidated condition.

The Lawrence County tax assessor’s office yesterday reported it had no owner on record for the property.
