NEW CASTLE — A Shenango Township police officer was killed Thursday night during a high-speed pursuit.

According to the Associated Press, the officer is William J. “Jerry” McCarthy, 60. McCarthy worked part time for the Shenango Township Police Department and at the Lawrence County District Attorney’s office.

He was killed when a woman allegedly trying to flee from police crashed into the vehicle McCarthy was in.

New Castle police had been in pursuit of a red Pontiac Sunfire on East Washington Street toward Cascade Park around 9 p.m. An eyewitness said the driver of the Sunfire, who apparently had turned onto Warren Avenue, ran a stop sign at Warren and Cascade Street.

The witness said she saw the Shenango police cruiser with its emergency lights on headed toward East Washington on Cascade. The cruiser, she said, was T-boned by the Sunfire.

The officer driving the police car, Michael Lynch, 35, also was hurt. According to KDKA-TV, he was transported to Jameson Hospital with serious injuries.

Multiple media outlets are reporting the suspect accused of fleeing police was Kylee Barletto, 26, of New Castle. According to police, she was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with facial lacerations and head injuries.

According to the Associated Press, court records show Lynch had cited Barletto for driving with a suspended license on April 12.
