NEW CASTLE —
Two men face burglary and related charges for allegedly breaking into the home of a retired New Wilmington police chief.
New Wilmington police filed the charges against Scott James Lauderbaugh, 29, of West Middlesex and Daniel James Tukalo, 20, of Sharon as the result of an incident early Tuesday.
Police also said they are investigating reports of multiple entries of garages and vehicles in the borough and expect to file additional charges against the pair.
The current charges involve an incident at the Beechwood Road home of former New Wilmington chief Richard Hanna.
According to police, Hanna’s son awoke Tuesday morning and heard sounds in the basement. He discovered two people in the basement, who then fled through a garage.
Police were contacted and went to the area, where they saw a vehicle and began to follow it. After checking the registration, they said, it was determined the vehicle was owned by Lauderbaugh, who does not have a valid driver’s license.
Police then stopped the vehicle and identified Lauderbaugh and Tukalo, officers said. Police interviewed the men, as well as a 19-year-old female who was in the vehicle. She was not charged.
Lauderbaugh and Tukalo are both charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass and attempted theft of a motor vehicle. Lauderbaugh also is charged with driving without a license.
They were placed in the Lawrence County jail after being unable to post $25,000 bonds.
The morning after the arrests, police noted, they received multiple complaints from residents that involved the theft of electronics, cash, jewelry, wallets, purses, medication, IDs and cell phones from garages and vehicles.
Police are continuing their investigation.
