Police: Reports for Jan. 28

NEW CASTLE — STATE

•Accident. Police said John Somora, 78, of Grove City was driving east on Route 208 in Washington Township  about 9 a.m. Wednesday when he tried to pass a stopped school bus driven by James P. Schooley Jr., 49, of Volant. Officers said Somora struck the left rear of the bus, disabling his vehicle. No injuries were reported. Somora was cited for careless driving. The Volant Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.

•Accident. Police said Lazaro Hernandez, 26, of Sharon apparently lost control of his vehicle on the snow-covered  Route 65 in Wayne Township about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Officers said the car struck a mailbox and several small trees. No injuries were reported.

•Accident. Police said the westbound vehicle of Kathleen S. Linz, 44, of New Castle, stopped for a traffic signal at the intersection of Routes 422 and 388 in Shenango Township about noon on Jan. 18 when she was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Kate M. Defonde, 26, of New Castle. No injuries were reported. Defonde was cited for failing to maintain control of her vehicle.

•Theft from vehicle. Police said  a saw and a rotary laser were reported taken from the back seat of a pickup truck parked in the 2000 block of Fairview School Road, Ellwood City, between overnight Jan. 19 to 20.

•Cruelty to animals. Ivy Sue Yeager, 40, of 2030 State Route 18, Wampum, was cited Tuesday with two counts of cruelty to animals after failing to provide proper shelter for two ponies in her card during  9-degree weather.

NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP

•Accident. Police said the vehicles of Bernard Seiler, 88, of 516 E. Hillcrest Ave.., and Sherri Pilch, 33, of 1906 Pulaski Road collided at 10:45 a.m. Thursday when Seiler pulled from a business lot onto Route 18, into the path of Pilch who was southbound. Police said Seiler, who will be cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic, was taken to Jameson Hospital.

•Accident. Police said the vehicles of Tori L. Pearson, 21, of Grove City, southbound on Route 18, and Winifred B. Brown, 73, of Pin Oak Drive, northbound on Route 18,  collided head-on at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday as Pearson turned left onto Fairmont Avenue. No injuries were reported. Pearson will be cited, police said.

•Accident. Police said  Elizabeth Yargo, 84, of Pulaski Road was driving west  on West Clen-Moore Boulevard at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19, when her car left the road and hit a rock, trapping her inside the vehicle. Police said Yargo was taken to Jameson Hospital to be checked.

    A woman involved in a fatal accident in Hickory Township has been charged. Laura E. Gargiulo, 42, of 2662 State Route 956, Volant, faces charges of homicide by vehicle and others in the crash that led to the death of Daniel E. Gallatin of Scott Township.

    A Pittsburgh man has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly breaking another man’s jaw in New Wilmington. Matthew Vincent Wagner, 22, was charged by New Wilmington police as the result of an incident early May 5 at the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity house on Waugh Avenue.

    New Castle police are investigating a robbery on the South Side. A 22-year-old woman told police she had been walking in the alley between Hamilton Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 3:30 a.m. May 8 when someone grabbed her from behind and punched her numerous times in the left side of her face.

    New Castle police are investigating a report of robbery on Arlington Avenue. A 24-year-old man told police he had been in the 800 block, walking to a friend’s house, around 12:50 a.m. Saturday, when he was jumped by a man who stole his wallet and cell phone.

  • police.jpg Men riding four-wheelers help catch burglar suspects

    Two men on four-wheelers helped New Castle police catch two Remacor burglary suspects. Brian John Scott, 26, and Charles John Mulroy II, 32, both of New Galilee, are accused of breaking in through a hole in Remacor’s fence to steal about 200 feet of wiring, phone line and pipe around 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Yes. If it’s a more efficient way to run the jail, I’m all for it.
No. I think there would be too many questions of liability for the county.
