Coroner: Drowning victim's death was accidental

NEW CASTLE — The death of a Slippery Rock Township woman pulled from a Scott Township lake Wednesday was due to drowning.

Lawrence County Coroner Russell S. Noga said an autopsy on the body of Nancy Ellen List, 26, of 6074 Old Route 422 Extension indicated “death was consistent with a fresh water drowning.”

Noga said the victim suffered no trauma, only a few scrapes on her face, also consistent with drowning in the lake which contained logs, stumps and debris.

He sad he anticipates a toxicology report will be available within a week or two.

“At that time we’ll rule on the death,” he said. “Right now it appears the ruling will be accidental, due to drowning.”

He said the autopsy was performed at Heritage Valley Hospital, Beaver County.

Pennsylvania state police said List was fishing with her husband, Michael William List, 29, in a small aluminum rowboat on a private, man-made lake off Countyline Road in Scott Township.

According to police, her husband said the boat flipped over. He said the two tried to push the boat toward shore, but she struggled and slipped beneath the surface of the water.

Police said he tried to summon help. Divers, police and rescue teams searched on Tuesday night, then resumed on Wednesday morning. Divers located List’s body in about eight feet of water at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday.

The two had been married for almost two years.
