Traffic stop yields suspected ‘bath salts’

NEW CASTLE — An Ellwood City man arrested Thursday allegedly had suspected illegal bath salts in his car.

Police charged Knowledgeborn Furman Jamel Price, 37, of 1208 Crescent Ave., formerly of Aliquippa.

Officers said they saw Price driving away from a convenience store in Ellwood City and pulled him over upon finding his vehicle registration is suspended for insurance cancellation.

Police said his license also is suspended and he failed field sobriety tests.

When searching him, they found a plastic bag hidden in his sock that contained 17 smaller bags of hard white substances, which they later determined to be suspected bath salts.

According to Wikipedia, the term bath salts is used to describe some illegal designer drugs that have effects similar to amphetamine and cocaine. Their white crystals can resemble legal bathing products such as epsom salts, but they are chemically different and are known to be snorted, smoked or injected.

Price had $374 in his pockets, police said, and additional bags of the substance were in view in the door pocket of the car.

When he was removed from the car, officers also found a bag on the floor between his legs that contained eight smaller bags of a suspected bath salts, according to police.

The bag containing 17 bags of the substance weighed 20.3 grams, police said, and the one with eight bags weighed about 3.8 grams.

All were submitted to a crime lab for testing.

Price allegedly told police the bags contained bath salts he had bought at a Wal-Mart and that he had broken it up and repackaged it to sell.

He said he was going to sell the smaller bags for more. He told the officers he also had about an ounce of marijuana in three bags in his center console.

Price was taken to Ellwood City Hospital for a chemical blood test, and his car was towed to the borough police garage for an authorized search after a police canine sniffed the inside of Price’s car and indicated the driver side door.

Price is charged with possession with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while his license is suspended with a blood alcohol count of 0.02 percent or higher, and suspended vehicle registration.
