Stabbing victims out of hospital, charges pending

NEW CASTLE — A father and son stabbed on the South Side last week are out of the hospital.

New Castle Police Chief Bobby Salem said the men are being interviewed and he expects charges to be filed later in the week.

According to police, Terry L. Kohlmetz, 25, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center’s trauma center in Youngstown, and his father, Joseph R. Bohizic, 50, was flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Both men live at 528 E. Long Ave., where Wednesday’s stabbing occurred.

Police responded to a 911 call at the house and the woman who had answered the door told them her boyfriend had been stabbed. Officers said there was another woman in the house holding a baby when they arrived.

Police said Bohizic had been standing in a doorway between the living room and kitchen, but fell to the floor and police saw he had been stabbed in the back.

Kohlmetz had been stabbed in the buttocks, police said, and was treated by ambulance personnel before his transport.

Police said Lawrence County Children and Youth Services was granted temporary custody of the baby.

Officers reported finding a folding pocket knife open on a kitchen counter.

Kohlmetz told police he had been lying down when he was stabbed with a hunting knife, and that he had been burned on his nose with a cigarette. He said he and his father had been fighting.

Police were told Bohizic had been stabbed with a butcher knife and officers found a kitchen knife in the sink in a pool of red water.

New Castle firefighters also responded to render first aid.

Members of the household reported the occupants had been fighting throughout the day.

According to a statement issued by police last week, Bohizic had stabbed Kohlmetz, then Kohlmetz’s girlfriend tried to intervene but Bohizic threatened her with a knife. The girlfriend then stabbed Bohizic, ran upstairs and called 911, police allege.
