Man arrested for firing shots at car

NEW CASTLE — New Castle police have arrested a West Side man for allegedly firing shots and possessing guns and heroin.

Police have charged 20-year-old Justin Travis Miller of 802 B Sankey St. after a man driving on Grant Street near the bridge reported that someone had shot at his car around 12:21 p.m. Saturday.

The victim drove to the city building and found a gunshot hole in his passenger door and called the police. The officer said a large-caliber gunshot round had penetrated the door and the passenger seat.

A man walking on the rain tracks near Halco Drive had told police the shots came from Sankey Street in West View Terrace.

Police meanwhile learned that another officer had arrested Miller, who fit the description of the man who had been shooting, and that several spent shells were found outside the back door of his apartment.

Miller was inside and officers arrested him. While doing a protective sweep of the apartment, they found a  backback on the floor of an upstairs bedroom closet with the butt of a loaded Winchester sawed-off shotgun sticking out of it, and a Taurus .45 semiuatomatic pistol inside.

Police searched Miller and found $1,665 in cash in his pockets.

After putting Miller into a jail cell, officers  found 30 wrapped packages of suspected heroin weighing 6.8 grams, and another bag containing 4 grams of suspected heroin in a corner of the cell. Police viewed a video of the cell that showed Miller digging in his pants, then backing into the corner, then pulling his hands out of his pants and walking away from the corner.

Police obtained a search warrant for Miller’s apartment,  and in addition to the guns, they reportedly found more suspected heroin in a kitchen cabinet, a magazine with 10 live bullets, a counterfeit $10 bill, suspected marijuana inside a backpack, a plastic bag containing various types of suspected narcotics, a number of unidentified pills, weigh scales and other alleged drug-related items.

He faces two counts of possession with intention to deliver narcotics and one count each of propelling missiles into occupied vehicles, distributing a small amount of marijuana, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, recklessly endangering another person, propulsion of missiles onto roads and prohibited discharge of a firearm.

He was arraigned by District Judge Melissa A. Amodie, who sent him to the Lawrence County jail in lieu of  $25,000 bond.
