Man charged after hitting Capitol Grille

NEW CASTLE — An East Side man is facing charges after a December accident when his truck allegedly hit the Capitol Grille building.

On Wednesday, New Castle police charged George A. Stevens, 58, of Apt. 412, 814 W. Washington St., in connection with the accident that occurred around 1:50 p.m. Dec. 31.

Police had been called to the bar at 108 N. Mercer St. for a hit-and-run accident.

The bar manager told police he had been inside playing dominos when he heard a loud bang outside the door. He opened the door and recognized Stevens, who was backing his truck off the curb, he told police.

He said he asked Stevens for his insurance information, but Stevens drove away.

Police said a wall of the building was damaged.

Officers later found Stevens at another bar on the city’s South Side, they said, and saw his truck parked on the street with a front headlight cover missing from it.

Stevens allegedly failed three field sobriety tests and refused a blood alcohol test.

He is charged with two counts of driving under the influence, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property and failure to give information or render aid.

He was issued a summons to appear in court.
