NEW CASTLE —
A New Castle man is jailed on $50,000 bond after allegedly taking more than $450 in merchandise from Walmart.
Morris Wayne Haas, 49, of 109 Phillips Place, is charged by Union Township police with four counts each of retail theft, receiving stolen property and theft by deception.
According to police, Haas and two accomplices concocted a scheme to remove merchandise from the Walmart Superstore in Union Township and later return it, accepting a gift card from the store.
Police said the three were viewed on surveillance cameras selecting merchandise, leaving the store without paying for the items, bagging the stolen merchandise in the parking lot and reentering the store to “return” it.
The store issued gift cards at 7:10 p.m. Sept. 1 for $188.41, at 8:58 p.m. Sept. 17 for $69.79 and again at 9:44 p.m. that day for $73.88 and at 4:02 p.m. Sept. 18 for $126.79.
Haas faces unrelated retail theft and receiving stolen property charges from Sept. 15.
Union Township police said on that day, he entered Get-Go on State Street at 4:30 p.m., allegedly took beef jerky valued at $27.56 and tried to return it for cash. Without a sales receipt, the manager denied the return and police said Haas left the store with the jerky, without paying for it.
